North Goa Vs South Goa: Which Is a Better Place for Vacations?
The start of every Goa trip is the same text message in the group chat. Someone is in the mood for dawn-dusk beats and drinking with strangers. Someone else wants a quiet stretch of beach, a good book, and nobody else at all. North Goa versus South Goa has been a classic debate for years; truthfully, neither is right, they’re just two very different kinds of holiday sharing a postcode.
This is how to determine which half of Goa suits your style of relaxing.
North Goa: The Loud, Bright, Never-Sleeping Half
This is where the state earned its fame. Baga, Calangute, Candolim, Anjuna, Vagator and Morjim lay side by side, criss-crossed by roads packed with scooters, flea markets, tattoo parlours, cafes open for breakfast right up until four o’clock in the afternoon and beach clubs that don’t come alive until they go dark.
This is a bustling and lively beach. You will find a lot of water sports, banana boats, parasailing, shacks lined up closely, vendors walking along the sand. If your idea of a beach is always on, you’ve found the right place. Anjuna and Vagator are more bohemian and cliff-bungalow-goal, Morjim and Ashwem a touch more relaxed and classy, and Baga and Calangute all about lively tourism.
Nightlife is North Goa’s trump card. No other part of India offers the same variety as Tito’s Lane, Curlies, sunset sessions in Vagator, techno nights in Anjuna, live gigs at the Assagao cafes et al. If nightlife is anywhere close to the top of your list, you already know the answer to North Goa or South Goa.
North Goa is also more flexible when it comes to cost. Within five km, you’ll be able to eat in a hostel for a few hundred rupees a night or stay in a private villa with a pool, cheaper eating, cheaper transport and much more.
Who fits North Goa: Friends on a trip; first timers; party groups; lone travellers; bachelorette /bachelors days; anyone who likes fun and wanting to try out new things.
South Goa: The Slow, Green, Beautiful Half
Head south from the Zuari and the terrain turns lush. Palm plantations are dotted where posters were once posted. Traffic begins to decline. Beaches lay ahead, sprawling and remote, and you could stroll for twenty minutes before we reached a soul.
Palolem, Agonda, Patnem, Colva, Benaulim, Cavelossim and Betalbatim. Most of the action is in the south, and they’re gloriously empty. Agonda and Patnem beaches are almost too tranquil even for most of us; Palolem is the most bustling of the south and is quiet by northern standards; and there are big resorts, Portuguese mansions, spice plantations, Cotigao Wildlife Sanctuary and the fort of Cabo de Rama.
South Goa has a different way to do nightlife, through a silent disco on the sand, dinner on the beach, or a bottle of wine on the balcony of a villa. The eating places have early closing hours. The pace is slow intentionally. That’s the point.
The indulgence is convenient. Fewer cafs, fewer shops, fewer all-hours transport options, longer drives for whatever you want to do. Plus South Goa is more expensive to buy in at the luxury end of the scale, although villas beyond the resort belt are still incredibly good value.
Best for: South Goa’s fit for: honeymooners, couples, families with younger children, senior citizens, digital nomads and all who see holidays as an opportunity to unwind in peace and quiet.
Which Is Better for Your Group?
South Goa is far more romantic for couples and honeymoons with private beaches, sunset dinners, spa mornings, and a pool villa. North Goa’s the better option if you’re after nightlife, with Assagao, Siolim or Morjim in the middle ground of deserted and frenzied.
For families, South Goa. Beaches that are quieter and more shallow, fewer people, more space, safer roads and slower traffic, all of it really makes a difference when you’re traveling with kids or parents.
For friends North Goa, comfortably. Everything is nearby, everything is cheap and there is always something else to do at midnight.
Goa for the first time? Do the North then spend two or three days in the South. You’ll experience both Goa’s in one holiday.
Where to Stay in Goa
The best area to stay in Goa all boils down to what you are mornings. A private villa is a completely different story, it offers the pool, kitchen, space and privacy that a hotel room can’t compete with, in either half of the state.
Should North Goa be your chosen destination, Ekostay Peach Grove Villa and Ekostay Ezra Villa are great if your group prioritises a private pool to retreat to post a late night out.
Ekostay Salt Water Villa and Ekostay Avante Villa work perfectly for friends trips and a long weekend getaway, and finally, Ekostay Casa Vaga Villa in Parra, which is located in the very same village and among the palm tree lined roads that gave it such fame and popularity is a quieter spot to rest your head whilst still remaining easily commutable to all the main tourist hubs of Anjuna, Assagao and Vagator.
Going further south? Want to get away from it all? Villas have the space, the privacy and the slowness that South Goa is known for – perfect for honeymooners, couples and families.
All the villas are equipped with a private pool, your own dedicated helper and optional chef service, so your holiday is on your timetable not that of a hotel.
